Ergometers are training bicycles which are mounted. There are two different kinds of ergometers: the first is very similar to a normal bike and the athlete sits in upright position. The second one is also called recumbent ergometer or recumbent bike because the athlete trains in a recumbent position and the legs are stretched forward.

There are some criteria to consider when buying a new or used ergometer, because a professional machine in a gym needs to be more resistant and high-quality processed than a home training machine for occasional use.

An overview of the most important criteria:

Gyrating mass: the weight of the gyrating mass is directly connected to the operating performance of the ergometer, because the treading energy gets lost at the upper and lower treading points of the pedals. The gyrating mass helps to overcome this dead points and enables a calm motion sequence. The higher the gyrating mass of an ergometer is, the more fluid is the operating performance.

Braking system: a magnetic braking system is most recommendable for an ergometer because the fly wheel is slowed down by a magnetic field. If the magnetic field, similar to the functionality of the eddy current brake, is induced by an electronic coil, the intensity of the brake can be controlled by voltage and calibrated by a measuring station.

Pedal and tread unit: there are great differences between the bottom brackets. High-quality bottom brackets don’t need to be greased and provide a high durability.

Adjustable seat and handlebar: flexible adjustability of the seating position is very important for an ergonomic training. An adjustable handlebar allows persons of different height to use the same new or used ergometer. Furthermore the handlebars should provide several grip positions and a forearm rest.

Condition of the used machine: If you are interested in used training equipment, it is recommendable to ask for its condition. Overhauled and maintained machines from manufacturers or retailers of fitness equipment are of special interest, because they often provide an additional guarantee.
