Some exercisers prefer to work on their endurance, while others are drawn to the strength machines. But what is the difference between pure endurance and pure strength training, what strength equipment is available and what really makes sense in the gym? In this overview we will show you the differences, similarities and give you an overview of the various fitness equipment.
Strength and how to get it - what do strength and endurance mean for your muscles?
Strength is first of all a matter of definition. Riding an ergometer at low intensity for a long time also requires strength, of course, but it doesn't fall under strength training. This has something to do with the fact that muscle fibers are divided into two parts. Red muscle fibers contract slowly, they are responsible for our endurance, while white muscle fibers contract quickly. White muscle fibers are important when sprinting and exerting great force.
Strength training defines itself as a workout that primarily targets white muscle fibers - few repetitions with high intensity.
This high intensity is reflected in the weights used in strength training. The classic, pure strength equipment includes, for example, the weight bench, the multistation, the leg, shoulder and chest press or the pull-up bar.
So if you're wondering which strength equipment is available to you in the gym, that's also a matter of definition. Basically, all equipment on which you can work with heavy weights is considered to be strength equipment. But the rowing machine, treadmill or indoor cycle can also be used for targeted strength training. It's a question of intensity, even though you wouldn't usually call these machines strength equipment.
Free weight training in particular is just as flexible and can be done anaerobically or more aerobically. The latter allows you to do a long, low-level effort with light weights, whereas classic dumbbell training with barbells, kettlebells or medicine balls focuses on intense workout bursts.
