Whether on the radio, in the supermarket, at a concert, in the disco or in the gym - we are bombarded with music everywhere. And it costs. Because anyone who plays music in public has to pay the author by paying a license fee to GEMA (Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte). GEMA unites almost 70,000 music creators and publishers, who are to be fairly remunerated by the fee. As a fitness studio, you also have to register your music use with GEMA and pay a license fee. But what is this based on and what exactly do you have to pay for?
Music in the sports area of your studio
GEMA offers studios three different types of contracts: You can either commit for a whole year, in which case you save the most money, because this type of contract is the cheapest. Quarterly contracts and monthly contracts are also available. With these, you are more flexible in terms of termination, but you pay more here accordingly.
What exactly are the fees if you want to play music in the training area of your studio? For the playback of original sound carriers within the scope of an annual contract, GEMA charges 227,40 Euro for studios up to 100 sqm and 417.36 Euro for studios up to 200 sqm. If you play back music in your studio via a television set, a fee of per television set a fee of 165,42 Euro per year. If you would like a projection on a large screen, the up to 100 sqm it gets more expensive: Here you are at 525,45 Euro. If you provide your members the use of music via TV via headphones, which are integrated into the fitness equipment, you will have to pay 66.14 euros per headphone/fitness device.t will be due.
Extra charges also apply for the use of music in the bistro area as well as on the homepage, in telephone waiting loops and on answering machines.
In the current tariff overview of GEMA you can see exactly what and how much you have to pay.
Music in your fitness classes
If you offer fitness courses in your studio, such as aerobics, Zumba or body workout, you will also have to pay a fee for the music - and these courses live on music, after all. The rate for this is calculated based on the number of class participants, the amount of the membership fee and the number of class hours per month. The fewer people take part in your courses, the lower the fee. You pay the least if you have under ten participants per class hour, after that it goes up in increments of 5 (to 15, 20, 25, etc. participants).
