EMS has firmly established itself as a form of training. Current developments affect quality assurance in the field of EMS training: on the one hand, the modernization of radiation protection law provides for new regulations, and on the other hand, DIN standard 33961 has recently been expanded to include EMS training. Certification in accordance with this standard enables providers to document their quality in a neutral manner, make it visible in marketing and obtain legal certainty when using EMS.
The EMS market is one of the growth drivers in the German fitness industry. From (micro) studios and personal training services to additional offerings in fitness facilities, EMS training has firmly established itself in the market. Current regulations are intended to ensure the quality of EMS offerings: On the one hand, EMS training has been taken into account in the modernization of radiation protection law. On the other hand, it is now part of the series of standards DIN 33961 ("Fitness-DIN") series of standards. This means that EMS providers already have the opportunity to make their quality visible through neutral certification. It also gives them legal certainty when using EMS training.
Safety in EMS training
As part of the modernization of radiation protection law, new regulations were passed in the Federal Council on 19 October 2018, which also relate to the use of whole-body EMS training. The industry recognized at an early stage that the safety of the user is crucial when using EMS training and has developed a safety concept called "SAFETY FIRST" and developed specific recommendations for action. developed. These are based on the latest scientific research results from scientists at the universities of Cologne, Kaiserslautern and Erlangen who are conducting research in the EMS sector.
Extension of the DIN 33961 series of standards to include EMS training
The DIN 33961 series of standards is being expanded to include EMS training. This new Part 5 of the standards series is expected to be published in January 2019. The DIN standard regulates important areas such as equipment and requirements for EMS devices the usability of the devices, support concepts, training programs/procedures and personnel requirements for EMS training, initial questioning/anamnesis and training implementation and already covers the regulations of the modernized radiation protection law of 19 October 2018. The quality and safety of EMS training are thus anchored in an official DIN standard.
Legal certainty through certification in accordance with DIN standard 33961
The independent and neutral DIN certification based on a democratically legitimized standard offers all EMS providers the opportunity to actively position themselves as quality providers. In addition, the regulations of the DIN standard are a recognized standard in the application of EMS training and thus create legal certainty in terms of consumer protection. Anyone who obtains certification for EMS studios after DIN standard 33961 comes into force - probably in January 2019 - will also meet the legal requirements of the current radiation protection law. The certification body BSA-Zert has already announced that it will carry out certifications of EMS providers on the basis of DIN standard 33961 (Part 5).
