DSSV study: fitness industry still on the rise

Recently published the DSSV (Employers' Association of German Fitness and Health Facilities) again published its annual key data study, which provides information on current developments and key figures in the fitness and health industry. For years, the data collection has been carried out in cooperation with the auditing and consulting company Deloitte and the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG). Here are the most important results of the study (cut-off date December 31, 2017) "Key data of the German fitness industry 2018"!

Membership numbers up again

The number of members in German fitness studios has reached a record level and increased to 10.61 million people (previous year: 10.08 million). This now makes up a share of the total population of 12.9 percent (previous year: 12.3 percent). Thus, fitness training is again the form of training with the highest number of members, ahead of soccer (7.04 million), gymnastics (4.94 million) and tennis (1.39 million).

More fitness studios

The fact that fitness training is on the rise is also reflected in the number of fitness studios. The total number of facilities grew by 3.5 percent to 8.988 (previous year: 8,684). Both the number of stand-alone facilities and the number of chain facilities and micro studios increased.

Sales reach record level

The development of sales, which reached an all-time high, was also encouraging: a total of 5.20 billion euros fitness and health facilities were able to generate in 2017, which is 3 percent more than in the previous year (previous year: 5.05 billion euros).

Number of employees on the rise

As there are more and more fitness facilities, more employees are naturally needed. At the end of the year, the fitness and health industry employed 209.900 people were employed in the fitness and health industry (previous year: 209,200).

Students in the fitness market

Studying in the fitness and health industry is extremely popular. As of the December 31, 2017, cutoff date, there were 7.656 people were studying at the DHfPG. Dual students accounted for just under 4.300 fitness facilities and companies in the fitness industry rely on dual students. The most popular course of study continues to be the Bachelor of Arts in Fitness Economics.

Willingness to invest remains high

Willingness to invest remains at a high level, with more than 85 percent of the facilities plan to invest. This is favored by the economic and structural development of the fitness industry. The fact that more than 67 percent of facilities rate their own economic situation as "good" also makes investing more likely. The top three investment priorities in 2018 are training (96 percent of facilities), equipment (73.7 percent invested in equipment for Strength training) and DIN certification (53.6 percent).

EMS continues to grow

Microstudios are recording strong growth (10.3 percent) and increase to 2.265 facilities. In the process EMS training is playing an increasingly important role. In 2017, for example, more than 100 new EMS facilities opened in 2017 - Germany now has a total of 1.064 pure EMS studios, which together have around 130,000 members have. EMS facilities account for a share of 11.8 percent of the total market. Reasons for the growth include low space requirements, low investment volumes and high membership fees.

→ average monthly fee is 44 euros, micro studios are with 67 euros most expensive

→ more than half of the members in fitness studios are women
