On the occasion of the 20th World Cancer Day, the discussion about a nationwide ban of solariums has flared up. The German Cancer Aid and the Working Group on Dermatological Prevention have spoken out in favor of this; they see a connection between solarium use and rising skin cancer figures.
However, the "Ordinance on Protection against the Harmful Effects of Artificial Ultraviolet Radiation", known as the UV Protection Ordinance (UVSV) for short, has already been in place since 2012. On this basis, the German Sauna Association, as a state-certified organization, has so far trained more than 5,400 people to become specialists for UV radiation equipment in tanning studios, saunas, spas, fitness businesses and hotels. Managing director Rolf-A. Pieper, leader of the certifying place and the advanced training academy of the federation, appeals: ?Highest goal must be the health of the Solariennutzer. In addition it needs compellingly well trained technical personnel, which clears up competently and for the reasonable handling with UV irradiation devices instructs, to which also a skin type consultation belongs. The responsible authorities must carry out more controls to ensure effective enforcement of the UVSV. However, before going down the difficult path of banning tanning beds, the UV Protection Ordinance should first be applied consistently ."
