The legend of the ninjas and kunoichi (femaleform) is known worldwide. Warriors from ancient Japan. Spies who roamed the land quickly and quietly. Shadow fighters, for whom honor comes first. There are countless stories that tell about ninjas. Today marks the 15th anniversary of "Ninja Day." An occasion to look at the history of ninjas and where they can still be found today.
Of burgers and ninjas
The origin of the day began with a website that was not entirely serious. But from the beginning. In 1999 the site started "Ninja Burger" started its work. Contrary to what the name and also the page suggest, it is not directly about burgers or ninjas. It is advertised that every order, no matter where, would be delivered within 30 minutes. Fast like ninjas. However, since this is not a real burger delivery service, you should refrain from ordering.
In fact "Ninja Burger" launched its own card game, in which players play a kind of role-playing game about running a burger store. In 2003 calls "Ninja Burger" launched the "Day of the Ninja". The reason for this was the appearance of the film "Last Samurai". Since here the conflict between ninjas and pirates comes into focus, wanted to "Ninja Burger" wanted to spend a day as a contra to the "International Talk Like A Pirate Day". The date was chosen because that was the day the movie was released in Japanese theaters. So on December 5, it's live like a ninja for a day!
What is a ninja?
According to the definition, a ninja is a warrior organized in secret societies, who uses special weapons and a special fighting style. There are several theories about where ninjas came from and what exactly they did. The most popular one is that of a peaceful Buddhist family that was increasingly threatened. To prevent this, the ninjas were formed to fight the warriors of the lords, the samurai. Samurai and ninjas were different fighters. A samurai, for the sake of honor, was not allowed to fight in the dark, but only face to face. The ninja, which translates "Hidden", operated in the background. This is also the reason why he was not considered an honorable warrior by the samurai. Unlike about the samurai, there are no accurate reliable sources about the ninja. After all, it was a secret society. Other stories talk about the ninjas as spies, saboteurs or even assassins. The martial art of the Ninjas is still taught today and is called Ninjutsu.
