For the training of leg muscles it is more effective to use training machines. For the various groups of muscles there are special fitness machines. Below you can find a short overview:

Leg press: This is a strength training machine which suits especially for thigh training. According to the position of the training person, the training focus varies on different areas of the thigh muscles. While the abductors on the exterior side of the thigh get most trained when using a narrow leg position, the adductors on the inner side get most trained when using a wide position. New and used leg presses are available in different versions.

On a horizontal new or used leg press the athlete sits in an upright position and presses his legs on the tread. While using the machine, the seat slides on an even or slightly inclined track.

A different kind of working can be seen on a 45° new or used leg press which consists of a mobile rack loaded with weight plates.  On the rack a tread is mounted where the training person can put their legs on and move it as far as they are nearly completely stretched. The tread can also be fixed in this position by using a lever.

The dual pendulum leg press gives the opportunity for specific training of the left or right leg. This is possible by loading weight plates on 2 pendulums which can be deflected through 2 pedals.

Leg curl: training with new and used leg curls strengthens mainly the back area of the thighs. There are two different kinds of new and used leg curls depending on the position of the athlete: The recumbent leg curl with a long bench on which the athlete lies and the seated leg curl where the athlete sits in upright position pressing the thighs backwards.

Leg extension: The equivalent to the leg curl is the leg extension. It is especially suitable for isolated training of the front area of the thighs. When using new or used leg extension it is important to lock the position of the back rest at a point where the centre of rotation of the machine meets the human knee. The resistance padding then is near the upper ankle joint.

Abductor press: new or used abductor presses can be found in many gyms. The training is very simple: the athlete sits on the padded seat while his or her legs are lying calmly on the rest plates. Then the user presses the exterior sides of his legs against the padding and carries them controlled to the middle while breathing in.

Adductor press: With this machine the adductors are being trained. The user sits on the seat of the new or used adductor press and puts his legs on the leg rests. When with breathing out, the user presses them to the inside and lets them slowly slide to the outside again when breathing in. It is important to feel tension in the thighs even at the outermost point. This training machine suits especially for soccer players and women who want to tighten this area of the thighs.

Multi press station: If there is a multi press station in a gym, this provides the opportunity to do chinning with barbells. The advantage of multi press stations is that a single training person is able to train until its physical limits without needing help of a partner.
