The Employers' Association of German Fitness and Health Facilities (DSSV) publishes a representative survey of the German fitness market once a year, which provides an overview of current developments in the fitness industry. It is supported in this by the auditing and consulting company Deloitte and the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG).
We have summarized the most important results:
Record level of members
The market recorded an increase in membership of 4.2 percent compared to the previous year, which equates to growth of 390,000 members members. The industry thus has 9.46 million members, whose average age is 41.5 years is. This means that fitness remained the form of exercise with the highest number of members in 2015, followed by football and gymnastics.
The number of gyms saw a growth of 3.8 percent, increasing from 8,026 to 8,332 facilities. Especially the special interest facilities with areas smaller than 200 m² have gained strongly with 16.2 percent growth.
Total turnover of the fitness industry on the rise
In 2015, the fitness industry achieved a total turnover of 4.83 billion euros which represents an increase of 2.7 percent. Chain facilities gained a higher turnover with a turnover between 1 and 2 million euros than individual studios, which were able to generate a turnover between 250,000 and 1 million euros.
Membership fees and age structure
The average membership fee in a single studio was 52,55 Euro and in a chain studio 35,23 Euro. The most frequently offered contract term in 2015 was again the 12-month membership.
There was a slight shift in the age structure of the chain companies. The proportion of members between 20 to under 30 years has increased by 5.3 percentage points to 26.3 percent. A quarter of the chain members are still aged between 30 to under 40 years of agewhile the individual companies are dominated by the age group between 40 to under 50 years.
Future market fitness industry
Although the number of employees in the fitness industry has risen to just under 206,000 employees it has remained almost stable compared to other service industries. The majority of employees in fitness studios are trained trainers. trainers (44.9 percent in individual companies, 56.6 percent in chain companies). This is followed by employees with vocational training (e.g. sports and fitness management assistant), studies and medical qualification.
Student numbers continued to rise in 2015. 6.300 people qualified for a position in the fitness market by studying at the DHfPG as of 31 December 2015. The number of new enrolments increased by 8.3 percent to 2.484 were increased. The most popular course of study in the industry in 2015, with 3,117 students, is again the Bachelor of Arts Fitness Economics which corresponds to an increase of over 40 percent compared to the previous year. Other fitness industry degree programs also saw growth. The biggest growth was in the Bachelor of Arts Sport Economics course, which increased its student numbers by 45.6 per cent to a current total of 721. In contrast, a negative trend can be seen in the number of apprenticeships. The training program for sports and fitness management assistants is less popular and has suffered a decline of 3.7 percent.
Willingness to invest and future prospects of fitness studios
Almost 80 percent of individual operators and 76 percent of chain operators are willing to invest in the future. The former plan to invest an average of slightly less than 150,000 euros 150,000. Chain operators want to invest just under 200,000 euros of capital into the future. The high willingness to invest is also related to the positive assessment of their own economic situation. Chain stores rated their economic situation at 87.5 percent as good. Among the individual operators, just under 58 per cent their situation as gooda small proportion of them as satisfactory (31 per cent).
The positive trend in the fitness industry also has a positive effect on the forecasts for 2016. 75 percent of the individual operators and 90 percent of chain operators are optimistic about the optimistic and believe that the economic situation will improve.
Growing health awareness among people
The fitness and health industry is still on the rise. The latest figures impressively illustrate this. The consistently positive future prospects for the fitness and health industry are due not least to the ever-increasing health awareness of the population. For a growing proportion of people, training in the gym is now part of everyday life and more and more people are aware of independent active health care.
