In recent years, the high growth in gym membership is not only related to the general fitness trend. One reason is also the demographic development and an increased awareness in old age of the health-preserving effect of preventive training.
Studies prove the positive effect of strength training in old age
In the meantime, more and more older people are trying to keep fit by training and to counteract muscle loss in old age.
Many scientific studies prove the positive effect of equipment-based strength training on the general health of older people. A renowned study that examined the effect of intensive, progressive strength training on residents of a nursing home aged 72 to 98 showed a tremendous increase in muscle strength in the strength training group compared to the control group, which did no training. Participants in the strength training group increased their mean muscle strength by 113% with a training program consisting of 4 strength exercises with 3 sets and 8 repetitions at a power level of 80% of maximum strength, which they completed 3 times per week and for 10 weeks. Significant strength gains from progressive and intense strength training were also observed in other studies.
Regular training is highly recommended for older people
However, it is not only muscle strength that can be increased through strength training. Overall, regular training improves the general state of health and the occurrence of functional limitations can be prevented or delayed. Studies show an increase in quality of life of up to 30% compared to inactive people, with endurance activities having a particularly positive effect by strengthening the cardiovascular system. In addition, fitness training reduces the risk of falls. Muscle and balance training strengthen the postural muscles and train the sense of balance.
The many positive effects of preventive fitness training prove that it is highly recommended for older people to start exercising regularly. By doing so, they can improve their state of health and well-being. The German Fitness & Aerobics Association has already reacted to this and created a workshop that trains trainers specifically to take care of the 60 Plus target group.
