Many people suffer from movement disorders. Whether this is after injuries during sports, because of incorrect posture or after an operation. Very different reasons lead to disturbances in body function. Back pain, for example, accounted for the most days lost among employees. Absenteeism due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) has increased by almost one-third since 2005, according to a study by BKK. A good way to treat pain when moving and tension, is physiotherapy.
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy, the care of the sick, also known as physiotherapy, is used to improve, restore or maintain the functionality of the human body. The treatments are carried out exclusively by so-called physiotherapists whereby it is not the physiotherapist himself who decides whether physiotherapy with rehabilitation and therapy equipment is necessary. The prescription of physiotherapy is the responsibility of doctors in orthopedics and neurology, who determine the medical necessity. During physiotherapeutic examinations, it is decided whether the patient's movement restrictions should be treated by physiotherapy. If yes, then one usually starts with six sessions. The focus here is, of course, once again on health. Indeed, the goal is to improve, restore or maintain mobility through various treatments and, of course, physiotherapy can also be used for prevention.
When does physiotherapy help?
In all forms of joint and bone injuries of the musculoskeletal system, injuries to the tendons, ligaments or muscles, intervertebral disc surgery, , spinal injuries, amputations, operations on the skeletal system, physiotherapy can help. Often it is also a matter of tension due to poor posture. However, physiotherapy is not only used in orthopedics. It also plays a major role in neurology. For example, after a stroke, brain circulation disorders can be treated. The condition after brain and spinal surgery or after a head trauma can also be treated supportively by physiotherapy.
What does a physiotherapy treatment look like?
During physical therapy, for example, you lie on a treatment or massage table and the therapist applies certain hand movements to mobilize muscles. A physiotherapist can even release various tensions with the pressure of a finger. But before that, he checks exactly how their bad posture is and what leads to tension. Depending on the complaints, you can also be treated additionally with heat, cold or electronic currents. This is decided by the physiotherapist after a detailed preliminary examination. Then there is the possibility of electronic muscle simulation (EMS training), electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, loop therapy, thermotherapy with fango, ultrasound therapy and not to forget the medical training equipment. In addition, you will be shown exercises that you should continue to do at home afterwards in order to feel long-term success and reduce pain.
Can sport serve as a prevention of complaints?
The most important thing after a physiotherapeutic treatment is to continue to strengthen the muscles regularly and in the long term. That is why it is extremely important to always do the exercises you have learned at home or in a gym, so that the muscles you have built up do not atrophy again.
