CrossFit is considered one of the hardest workouts of all, and has become an absolute trend sport . Hundreds of thousands of fitness junkies worldwide train according to the intensive strength training method. CrossFit is also extremely popular in Germany: a total of around 23,000 people train in over 190 CrossFit boxes here, and the trend is rising. These are ideal conditions for you if you want to open a CrossFit box yourself. We'll tell you everything you need to know about it - from equipment to costs.
What is CrossFit and where does the training concept come from?
CrossFit is a highly effective training method developed in 1980 by Greg Glassman and his ex-wife Lauren Glassman. The fitness program follows a holistic concept, as a total of ten different fitness disciplines are to be trained in equal parts: Strength, Endurance, Agility, Speed, Dexterity, Balance, Coordination and Accuracy.
Typically, a CrossFit workout session lasts 60 minutes and consists of warm-up exercises, skill and strength training, high intensity training and stretching. During the workout, exercisers must run, row, jump rope, swim, climb ropes and lift weights, among other activities. This requires barbells and dumbbells, gymnastic rings, pull-up bars and kettlebells. Many exercises involve working with your own weight.
Who can open a CrossFit box?
Basically, anyone can open a CrossFit box. However, the name"CrossFit" is a protected term and may not be used without further ado. The company does not have a franchise system. But you can acquire the right to open a CrossFit box under the same name as a so-called "Affiliate".
To become an affiliate, you must attend a two-day training course for $1,000. In exchange, you receive a CrossFit company coaching license. In addition, each "Affiliate" pays an annual license fee of $3,000 to the parent company to be allowed to run their own CrossFit box under the same name.
If you want to start a CrossFit business without a license, that is of course also possible. However, you won't have permission to call it "CrossFit" and you'd have to switch to similar names like cross-training or cross-workout.
CrossFit Box: What equipment is needed?
Dead weight training as well as exercises with free weights take up a large part of CrossFit. If you want to open a CrossFit box, you will need about ten and twelve barbells as well as weight plates in different weight classes. A fitness rig, on which for example pull-ups can be performed, is also part of the equipment of a CrossFit studio. For endurance training, rowing machines and assault air bikes are also used, as well as medicine balls, gymnastic rings, climbing and skipping ropes and kettlebells for various other exercises. The equipment of a CrossFit box also includes a suitable floor, preferably made of rubber granulate. This can dampen vibrations and protects the floor underneath from damage.
What are the costs?
It's clear that there will be some costs involved if you want to set up a CrossFit box. But in contrast to a conventional gym, the fixed costs are relatively low. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that fitness equipment is not needed to the same extent as in conventional gyms. In addition, you do not need such large premises for your CrossFit business. Also the personnel costs are quite low in comparison, because two employees are completely sufficient for the current course enterprise.
Since CrossFit is not a franchise, as a so-called affiliate you only have to pay a license fee of 3,000 US dollars per year to the parent company. In addition, there is a small cost for business liability and theft insurance. If music is to be played during the training, GEMA fees are also added to the expense pot. On the other hand, there are the comparatively high membership costs, which are around 100 euros per month.
