Who can open a CrossFit box?
Generally speaking, anyone can open a CrossFit box if they want to. However, the name "CrossFit" is trademarked and cannot be used lightly. The company says it is not a franchise system, but refers to its partners as so-called "affiliates". If you want to open a CrossFit box, you can attend a 2-day training course for $1,000 and get a CrossFit company trainer's license. You are then an "affiliate" and pay a $3,000 licensing fee a year to start your own CrossFit box and be allowed to use the name "CrossFit" for it. Of course, you don't have to get a license to open a CrossFit studio. You just don't have to call it "CrossFit", you have to use similar names like Cross-Training or Cross-Workout.

What equipment is needed?
Since CrossFit consists mostly of deadlift exercises and free weights, you'll need about ten to twelve barbells for daily class use. Weight plates in different weight classes should also be available if you want to open a CrossFit box. An integral part is also the rig, which can be used to perform a variety of different exercises such as pull-ups. The size of the rig depends on the gym and the number of participants in the classes offered.
For endurance training, if you want to open a CrossFit box, you will need rowing machines and Assault Air Bikes. The latter is a mix of a cross trainer and a bicycle ergometer.
You will also need small equipment for CrossFit workouts, including dumbbells, medicine balls, gymnastic rings, climbing ropes, jump ropes, wooden boxes, kettlebells and pull-up bars.
If you want to open a CrossFit box, the floor is also an important aspect of planning. The most suitable floor is made of rubber granulate, which is available in different thicknesses. To protect the weight plates and the floor underneath, a 15 to 20 mm thick floor is usually sufficient.

Open a CrossFit Box: Costs
If you want to open a CrossFit box, there will be costs involved. Since there is no conventional fitness equipment in a CrossFit box, the initial purchase costs of about 50,000 to 60,000 euros are rather low in contrast to a gym. The monthly fixed costs are also relatively low, while the monthly membership fees of about 100 euros are comparatively high. Since CrossFit boxes are often located in simply furnished warehouses in industrial areas, the rent is therefore cheaper. Staff costs are also comparatively low, as two employees are initially sufficient for daily class operations and administrative tasks.
Cost points if you want to open a CrossFit box are the license fee of $3,000 that you have to pay annually, as well as insurances such as business liability insurance and theft insurance. If you want to play music during your workout, there's also the GEMA fee, which is based on the size of your workout space. Lower rents, less equipment costs and high chances of success due to a clear differentiator - this means less economic risk for you and reaching the break-even point faster. So opening a CrossFit box is worth it in any case!
