You want to lose weight and therefore weigh yourself regularly on a normal scale? Why not get yourself a body fat scale? because with these scales you can determine much more than just your weight. But not all body fat scales perform well in tests well!
What is a body fat scale?
A body fat scale measures not only your weight, but also your body fat percentage. These measurements work via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA for short), which involves passing a weak, imperceptible current through the body. This alternating current is generated by electrodes attached to the base of the scale.
An overview of the composition of one's own body is important not only for athletes and health-conscious people, but also for those who want to lose weight. This is because body fat scales allow you to determine whether you have actually lost fat and not just muscle mass after a diet.
Professional body fat scales from InBody
One of the leading manufacturers of body fat scales is InBody, whose highly accurate body composition analyzers are used professionally in more than 70 countries. Unlike many standard devices, InBody uses a special direct-segmental multi-frequency measurement, through which extremely accurate and precise results can be obtained.
In addition to InBody, other manufacturers of body fat scales include Tanita, Beurer, Omron, Soehnle, Medisana and Withings.
Body fat scales From Aldi, Lidl and Co.
In addition to the professional devices there is also the possibility, Body fat scales at Lidl or Aldi to buy. But are these scales as good as the professional devices? The plus point of body fat scales from Aldi or Lidl is of course the price, which is far below the scales from InBody, for example. While professional body fat scales can also cost over 100 euros, the discount scales are already available for 15 euros. The disadvantage of inexpensive body fat scales, however, is that the measuring electrodes are only positioned in the scale and therefore only come into contact with the feet. In this case, the current only flows through the legs and the groin region, but does not reach the fat located above the legs, for example, on the abdomen. For precise measurement of body composition, these are suitable body fat scales therefore not. Stiftung Warentest also criticized these scales for frequently causing gross measurement errors in body fat analysis.
Body fat scales at test from Stiftung Warentest
A pure body fat scale test of the Stiftung Warentest does not yet exist, but a few models were analyzed as part of a test of body scales. The body fat scale test winner in 2014 was the Beurer body fat scale BG 13, which achieved a good result with a score of 2.2. All other body fat scales in the test received only "sufficient" in the calculation of the fat percentage. Expensive, professional body analyzers were not rated as good in the Body fat scales test not taken into account.
