The medicine ball - or Med Ball for short - is a piece of fitness equipment that most people still remember from PE lessons at school. But through more dynamic training teachings such as functional training, the medicine ball has also experienced a revival, because in it you will find a flexible weight for balance and strength training.
Find out how much weight your medicine ball should have and how to find the perfect model for you here.
From slams to twists, the medicine ball is a versatile training tool
First of all, you should compare the two different types of medicine balls. There is the classic pumpkin shape and the modern spherical shape.
As a classic medicine ball, the ball can also be chosen heavy, this shape is good for dragging or to squeeze between the legs when doing pull-ups. For slams or as a base for push-ups, these medicine balls are less suitable, because they do not bounce back enough and do not roll away - so the balance of the body falls away.
For a gym, you should also keep in mind that these balls take up more surface area. Round, stuffed rubber medicine balls are the size (and similarly textured) of a basketball. This means they take up less surface area and are great for med ball slams, push-ups, etc. You can roll them across the floor with ease and they challenge your balance, even smaller hands grip these balls securely.
Beginners should choose a weight of about 2-5 kilograms for the medicine ball, depending on the desired exercises and the fitness level. Much heavier medicine balls require much more strength or limit the exercises. Here you also have to ask yourself whether a kettlebell or dumbbell is better suited than a very heavy medicine ball.
For weights of 10-12 kilograms at the top you can still find medicine balls without any problems, without having to look for custom-made products. If you decide to buy such a heavy medicine ball, it would also be advisable to buy a lighter ball. This way you are more flexible when training with the med ball.

The right weight for the medicine ball
In studios or gyms, several medicine balls should definitely be available to cover a wide range of clients. Steps of 1 or 2 kilograms make it easy for exercisers to find their weight.
If you are looking just for you, you should buy the weight according to your strength level and dead weight to ensure clean execution. Strong athletes will find 5 kilograms a very versatile weight, while for more petite athletes 3 kilograms is a good weight.
