Origin of the day
The Day of the Bicycle has been celebrated since 1998. It is intended to bring cycling more into the focus of everyday life. This day has also been an official UN day since 2018, which aims to raise more awareness about the economical, healthy and ecological means of transportation. Many fans of the bicycle meet on this day for joint excursions, cycle to work or leave the car behind for a day. The Danish Copenhagenize Design Company has released an index to calculate how bike-friendly cities are. Various factors are included here, such as cycling culture, amenities, cycling infrastructure or urban planning, among others. The list is headed by Copenhagen in Denmark, the first German city in the ranking is Berlin. The capital of the Federal Republic of Germany still makes it to 10th place.
Cycling for the body and the environment
If you decide to ride your bike more often instead of taking the car, you will soon feel the positive effects on your body. Cycling not only burns up to 400 calories per hour, stimulates our fat metabolism and reduces cholesterol, it also contributes positively to our psyche. While riding, the body releases happiness hormones, which can even help against depression. Regular cycling supports muscle growth, is easy on the joints and helps the heart muscle to grow. This reduces the risk of a heart attack by up to 50 percent. Even if it should rain, for a small workout on the indoor bike your body thanks you of course.
As already mentioned, cycling not only has an impact on the body, but also on our environment. Hardly any topic is currently discussed as intensively as the topic of the environment and climate change. The fact is, a bicycle does not pollute the air and is probably the most environmentally friendly means of transport. According to various Danish studies, it even brings money to the cities if the inhabitants decide to use the bicycle. Per kilometer cycled, it brings the city and its residents about 24 cents. By comparison, a kilometer by car costs the city 85 cents. So when the weather is right, just take a bike ride instead of driving!
