A healthy diet is becoming increasingly important to people, and they are becoming more conscious about what they eat and buy. This is also confirmed by the Nutrition Report 2019 of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). This survey has been carried out annually since 2015 and for this purpose around 1,000 citizens aged 14 and over are questioned about their eating and shopping habits. Here are the most important results!

Delicious and healthy

Germans agree: Food must taste good! That is the opinion of 99 % of all respondents, regardless of age, gender and place of residence. Healthy and varied it must also be healthy, say 91 %.

71 % eat daily Fruit and vegetables

64 % consume daily Dairy products such as yogurt and cheese

28 % consume daily meat and sausage products ingest

23 % can rely on a daily ration of Sweet or savory snacks cannot do without

6 % eat a vegetarian, 1 % vegan


What is the favorite food of the Germans?

Roast, Schnitzel, Goulash: 33 %

Spaghetti, Lasagna, Spaetzle: 17 %

Salads and Vegetable dishes: 10 %

Cook for yourself or have it delivered?

74 % of respondents like to cookbut very few do it every day. 40 % stand at the stove every day, 37 % two to three times a week and 10 % never. Ready-made dishes are eaten by 6 % at least once a week from a delivery service at least once a week. This is more common among the younger generation: One in ten of 14- to 29-year-olds have something delivered at least once a week.

Also eating out is also popular. 73 % of Germans eat out in a restaurant at least once a month. 20 % visit a canteen at least once a week.

Shopping: Local and high-quality

Although it is now possible to have groceries delivered directly to your home, the majority of Germans prefer to purchase them locally in the supermarket. Thus 60 % of all survey participants go shopping several times a week, 9 % daily. Only one in ten has their groceries delivered. This tends to be done by younger people and city dwellers.

More and more consumers want to responsible and are interested in how food is produced. 70 % are interested in animal welfare is close to their hearts, 68 % would like to see the careful use of natural resources resources, and 64 % want fair wages in agriculture. 54 % are in favor of environmentally friendly production and 64 % want a high quality in the products. The respondents are aware that high production standards make food more expensive. For example, they are prepared to pay more for meat from animal-friendly production.

Germans are also interested in the legally required information on food packaging. For example, information on ingredients and additives for 84 % important role, while 80 % information on the origin and 79 % to the best-before date take a closer look.


Seniors: What changes in retirement?

Eating habits change as we age. 52 % of Germans take more time to eat more time for eating and 42 % cook more often themselves. More than one in three eats ready-made meals less often. 52 % still visit restaurants as often as before retirement, 9 % even more frequently.

For older people, there is the option of "Meals on Wheels"meals on wheels. Eight out of ten respondents are aware of this service, and nine out of ten among seniors over 60. Less widespread are the Lunch offersof which one in two has already heard.
