What is automation?
Automation refers to the independent operation of machines that reduces or eliminates the need for human communication or control. Digitalization has a direct influence on automation. Technology is getting better and better, and things that were unimaginable 50 years ago are now standard. Back then, dishwashers and dimmable lights were a real sensation; today, they are the norm. Advancing technology is giving people more and more options.
Where does automation take place?
In every area of our lives, we come into contact with automated machines. Often we do not consciously notice this, they are part of everyday life. Whether in industry or private life, everywhere our lives are simplified by devices that perform work processes on their own. From the automotive industry, for example, we regularly hear about new technologies designed to increase driving comfort. Windshield wipers that automatically detect rain, cruise control or cars that park themselves are just a few examples. But you also see little helpers in private households more and more often. Vacuum cleaning robots, motion detectors or the control of heating and lighting with a smartphone are no longer uncommon.
Possibilities of automation in the gym
Automation is also on the rise in the gym. There are already several areas in which processes can be automated. Starting with going in, where usually only a plastic card or a wristband to a sensor and you're already checked in - the manufacturer's Identbase and iDTRONIC have specialized in such card systems. It works in a similar way in the changing rooms at the lockers. Just insert the card, the locker is locked and can only be opened again with this card. This means that members no longer have to wait at the counter to be checked in, and employees can use the time for other work. On the training floor, the issue gets a little more exciting. At Circuit Training from milon for example, members' data is stored and the machines adapt. They do this by reading size settings, weights and grip positions individually for the person from the card.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of automation?
With automation comes several advantages and disadvantages for people. Automation has one major advantage above all, it makes our lives immensely easier. We are relieved psychologically as well as physically, resulting in enormous time savings for humans. An advantage for the industry and for operators of studios is that machines do not get tired, accordingly do not need breaks and do not draw a salary. This results in reduced costs, except for acquisition and maintenance. In addition, machines very rarely make mistakes, which increases product quality. At the same time, however, this is a disadvantage for many employees. For many, automation could cost them their jobs. Some jobs no longer need to be filled by people, but will be replaced by machines.
Automation is the future
Automation is far from complete; on the contrary, it is just beginning. Gym operators should not miss the opportunity to modernize their studios as well, as electronic lockers, door locks and smart equipment will soon be standard in many studios.
